The British Olympic Association’s (BOA) publication ‘Team GB 2008: Countdown to 2012’ charts the annual progress of each summer and winter Olympic sport and other useful information such as:
· 2008-2009 funding figures;
· athletes to watch by sport;
· key events in 2009;
· 2008 medal table by sport;
· statement by each sport’s Chief Executive (or equivalent) looking back at 2008 and challenges to come in 2009;
· sport’s contact details.
Boding well for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, the 2008 relative medal table for winter sports shows the fantastic leap that Team GB has made moving from 23rd place in 2007 to 12th in 2008.
The 12th place position is thanks to Kristan Bromley’s gold from the 2008 Bob Skeleton World Championships, the Scottish* men’s silver medal at the 2008 Curling World Championships (David Murdoch, Graeme Connal, Peter Smith, Euan Byers) and the men’s relay team’s bronze at the 2008 Short Track Speed Skating World Championships (Jon Eley, Paul Stanley, Tom Iveson, Paul Worth).
