'Great to Play With Andy,' Says Jamie Murray
09 Aug 2008
The Murray brothers begin their bid for Olympic tennis glory in the men’s doubles when they play Canadian pair Daniel Nestor and Frederic Niemeyer on Sunday afternoon at 17:00 local time (August 10, 10:00 BST).
Nestor is currently ranked as the world’s best doubles player and won Olympic men’s doubles gold at Sydney 2000, but Jamie Murray believes that he and brother Andy have the ammunition to fire them to victory at Beijing’s Olympic Green Tennis Centre.
“It’s difficult. Nestor’s number one in the world at the moment, and he’s been playing great this year,” he says.
“He won Wimbledon this year and he and Niemeyer play Davis Cup together, so we know it’s going to be tough. But we think that if we perform well we can get through.”
As younger men the British siblings regularly played doubles together, and Jamie insists that experience can only benefit the pair.
“It probably does help because we’ve played a lot together, although perhaps not in the last few years,” he says.
“A lot of the teams here are scratch pairings. Players have had to split up because you have to play with someone from the same country.
“It’s great to be playing with Andy. He’s playing great just now, playing some of the best tennis of his life.”
