British Boxing Gold at Beijing Test Event

23 Nov 2007

A team of four British boxers competed at the recent ‘Good Luck Beijing’ test event held in the Olympic boxing stadium for the 2008 Olympic Games.

Scarborough ABC’s Danny Price claimed gold for Britain with victory in the 91kg category, while Paul Butler took bronze in the 51kg class. The tournament also provided valuable experience for up and coming boxers Anthony Ogogo (69kg) and Thomas Stalker (57kg).

The trip presented GB Head Coach Terry Edwards and his staff with an excellent opportunity to observe the Beijing 2008 Olympic boxing venue in action.

The GB squad have returned home to reflect on an extremely busy and successful year and will resume the Olympic qualification campaign in earnest in 2008.

The squad has already qualified boxers at four of the eleven Olympic weight categories (54kg, 60kg, 64kg, 81kg) through performances at the recent AIBA World Championships in Chicago.

However GB boxers will be looking to improve on this total at the two remaining European zone Olympic qualifiers on 24th February 2008 in Pescara, Italy and on 6th April 2008 in Athens, Greece.
