European Gold and Silver for Scottish Curling Teams
The Scottish men’s curling team emerged victorious from the European Championships in Fussen, Germany on 8th December. The Scots, led by David Murdoch, overcame Norway 5-3 in the final to take the gold medal.
The win over Norway capped a remarkable turnaround for the Scottish team who had only qualified for the semi-finals after a play-off. This was in stark contrast to the Norwegian’s who were unbeaten in the competition prior to the final, including a hard fought 7-6 victory over Scotland in the group stage.
David Murdoch and his team of Euan Byers, Peter Smith, Graeme Connal and alternate Peter Loudon were delighted to improve upon the silver medal they won at last season’s competition in Basel. However, Scotland’s women were forced to settle for second best as they went down 9-4 to Sweden in their final.
The Scottish team, commanded by Kelly Wood, found their Swedish opponents, led by seven times European and reigning Olympic champion Anette Norberg, too hot to handle on the day. Despite the final defeat, the Scottish women can be proud of their silver medals at the end of a hard week.
By finishing in the top eight positions at these European Championships, both Scottish teams have ensured their participation at the 2008 World Championships, which is one of three events at which they can accumulate Olympic qualification points on behalf of Team GB for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
