Statement: British Ski & Snowboarding
10 Feb 2010
Statement from the new National Governing Body for skiing and snowboarding in Great Britain.
British Olympic Association Chairman Colin Moynihan said:
“Following the announcement that Snowsport GB has gone into Administration, FIS, the International Ski Federation, informed the British Olympic Association that it will ‘recognise Team GB Ltd., which will trade as British Ski & Snowboarding (BSS) as the Governing Body for Ski and Snowboard in Great Britain with immediate effect’.
We have agreed with FIS that our first priority is to ensure that the 14 skiers and snowboarders selected to represent Team GB at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games are supported in full with the resources necessary to compete at their highest level. Thanks to the volunteers, Home Nations, TASS, SIS, UK Sport and new sponsors and private donors introduced by BSS we have, over the last six days worked together to ensure that the £100,000 required to send the British Team, their accredited coaches and support personnel to Vancouver has been raised to enable our athletes to compete at the highest level.
The BSS will also ensure that FIS registration and FIS race entries continue for all accredited athletes without undue disruption and that we will take on all FIS responsibilities for the British Governing Body. We will also continue to work with stakeholders to see whether the British Championships can be held this year. We very much hope so.
Following the end of the season FIS has welcomed our commitment to carry out the most comprehensive consultation process with British skiers and snowboarders in the history of our sport. Our goal is to make sure the interests of the athletes are best served as BSS transitions to represent all British skiers and snowboarders with a strongly funded British Governing Body securing the interests of our best athletes. This will include a British Pathway for the best Children, Juniors and Seniors able to represent Great Britain and Northern Ireland at all Olympic accredited events including the Winter Olympic Games, the European Youth Olympic Festivals and the first ever Youth Olympic Winter Games to be held in Innsbruck 2012.
The skiers, Clubs, Academies, volunteers, stakeholders and Home Nations will all continue to have an important role to play in the future. Their voices will be heard to ensure that British Ski & Snowboarding takes its place alongside the leading National Governing Bodies for sport and never again goes into bankruptcy.
With the support of FIS, I am honoured to have been asked by the Executive Board of the BOA to take on the role of Chairman and work with our new Chief Executive Dave Edwards through the transitional phase to ensure BSS emerges strongly to represent our athletes. In so doing we will seek to work closely, in everything we do, with the Clubs, Academies, Home Nations, stakeholders and volunteers who do so much on behalf of British skiers and snowboarders.”
