BOA Thanks Athletes and Visa for Team 2012 Support

10 Dec 2009
The British Olympic Association (BOA) is delighted that the Team 2012 initiative has been successful in delivering vital funding to Olympic and Paralympic sports, as announced by UK Sport today.

Team 2012 is a groundbreaking partnership between the BOA, the British Paralympic Association (BPA), the London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), and UK Sport with the aim of helping realise the dreams and ambitions of Britain’s Olympic and Paralympic athletes by providing a third stream of financial support from the private sector, to complement the significant support already provided by Government and the Lottery.

The funding distribution announcement comes less than three months after Visa were revealed as Team 2012’s Presenting Partner. The funds will make an important difference to the training and competition support for sports and athletes over the next two and a half years as they aim for success with Team GB and Paralympics GB in London 2012.

BOA Chief Executive Andy Hunt said:

“We are delighted that the UK Sport Board has recognised the needs of the ‘basic’ funded sports by confirming vital additional funding to seven of the eight ‘basic’ funded sports.

“Team 2012 has been an absolutely top priority for the BOA in 2009. We recognised that we needed to respond to the concerns of our membership regarding funding in the lead up to 2012, so it is extremely rewarding to see funds raised by the Team 2012 initiative being distributed to the sports and helping to make a real difference to their preparations for London 2012.

“As well as acknowledging the vital contribution of Visa as Presenting Partner, we also sincerely thank the athletes for their valuable support and dedication to the scheme, which benefits their fellow athletes. Without their participation and commitment this announcement would not be possible.

“Today represents a proud moment for the four partner organisations in the Team 2012 initiative and is a testament to the collaborative nature of our relationship.”

BOA Chief Commercial Officer Hugh Chambers said:

“The BOA continues to drive forward Team 2012 fundraising towards the target of £25m by 2012. We have recently introduced the Team 2012 Appeal to potential individual donors and are in discussions with further corporate sponsors of Team 2012. We are confident that the programme will continue to deliver financial benefits to our Olympic sports.”
