Team GB Third in Medal Table
30 Jul 2007
After 5 days of competition in approximately 40 degrees Celsius heat at the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) in Belgrade, Serbia, Team GB finished third in the overall medal table with 9 gold, 7 silver and 7 bronze medals.
Russia clinched most gold medals (18 gold), whereas Italy secured 10 golds to edge ahead of Team GB into second place. Team GB has gradually improved its position, placing 3rd at the previous EYOF in 2005 in Italy and 4th in France in 2003.
British Olympic Association (BOA) Chef de Mission Mark England said:
“Although Team GB won medals across 5 sports, the most pleasing aspect of the Festival was the number of personal bests recorded by many athletes. The EYOF gave all 64 of our young athletes a chance to compete under the Olympic rings and to experience the unique environment that comes with living in an Olympic Village, with other sports and countries.”
Commented BOA Chief Executive Simon Clegg:
“The great performances of young British athletes at the EYOF bode well for future Olympics. The fact that Team GB secured third place in the overall medal table demonstrates, once again, the array of talent that we have at this level. This is particularly encouraging in the context of London 2012 and the future of British sport.”
