Chris Hoy and Ross Edgar took Team GB’s cycling medal count to five in three finals on Saturday evening local time as they completed a memorable one-two in the men’s keirin.
Hoy, following on from his gold medal in the men’s team sprint on Friday evening (August 15), simply had too much power for his rivals and pulled away to win comfortably and pick up his second first place finish in 24 hours.
The win stretches his Olympic Games medal collection to three golds, including one in the 1km time trial from Athens 2004, as well as the silver he won in the team sprint at Sydney 2000.
Hoy said: "It's just incredible. Physically it wasn't an easy race, because of the races yesterday and their close proximity.
"I just had my head down and was thinking about the finishing line - nothing else," he said. "I think that race was one I'll remember for a long time. It just means everything to me.
"With six guys in the race, anything can happen. You can have a game plan, but that can change at any moment. You have to think on your feet and that's what I've learned over the last couple of years.
"All I can think about now is the time trial," he added.
He was followed over the line at the Laoshan Velodrome in Beijing by team-mate Ross Edgar, who pipped Japan’s Kiyofumi Nagai to the silver medal.
For Edgar that success brought a first Olympic medal following on from his fifth place finish in the individual pursuit at Athens 2004.
He said: "It's just amazing. I was trying not to think about winning a medal beforehand because I didn't want my emotions to take over.
"You just have to keep to your game plan, which was to sit at the front of the race and see what happens," he added. "It was just fantastic."
