Reeve and Whitlam Finish Sixth in Pairs

16/08/2008

The Team GB rowing duo of Louisa Reeve and Olivia Whitlam finished sixth in the Women’s pairs final on Saturday afternoon.

Although they made a strong start, by the halfway point the crew were out of the running as the fight for gold was starting to take shape.

The gold medals went to Andrunache and Susanu of Romania in 7.20.60 with crews from China and Belarus taking the silver and bronze medals.

Reeve and Whitlam, who have only been rowing as a pair since June, completed the course in 7.33.61, but always looked to have their work cut out against reigning Olympic champions Romania and World Champions Belarus.

Afterwards Whitlam said: "It didn't go as well as the absolute perfect race would have done, but it was a starting point. We knew what we wanted to do, but it wasn't our best race.

"Actually, it's been an amazing experience just sitting at the starting line with the Romanians and the Belarus team.

"I wouldn't stop those seven and a half minutes of my life for anything, even losing. It was just awesome," she added.

Reeve added: "We've ended on a high. Twelve weeks ago we wouldn't even have thought we would be standing here."
