Wright Calls Time After Missing Final

16/08/2008

Trampolinist Claire Wright has retired from competition after narrowly missing out on qualifying for the final of the women’s gymnastic trampoline event at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

She finished in 10th place overall to earn a place as a reserve for the medal round.

“That was my last ever competition, so I wish I had made the final. But that said I’ve had a great experience,” she said.

Wright, who won world cup individual bronze in 2006 and 2007, was lying in equal sixth spot after the first round of qualification, her score of 29.10 just one behind leader He Wenna of China.

In her second routine, the voluntary section, the 29-year-old attempted a degree of difficulty of 14.0 and was awarded a score of 34.00 to give her a total of 63.10.

“I got through my routines so obviously I am pleased with that,” she said. “But I am disappointed to miss out on the final. Not everything went to plan, though, the beginning was good but I made a mistake and that cost me.”
