Team GB’s Judo campaign ended on Friday (August 15) as Karina Bryant exited the heavyweight category in her opening fight.
Bryant, a three-time Olympian, could not overcome the efforts of Mexican Vanessa Zambotti and was beaten by two Yukos and a Koka, to which she only had a Koka in reply.
Zambotti later lost to Japenese Tsukada Maki ending Bryant’s slim hopes of a return via the repechage.
It was a disappointing campaign for Bryant, a four-time world championship silver medallist, who felt she had not performed to the best of her abilities.
“I’m very frustrated - I’m more disappointed than anything, because I didn’t perform to my full potential. Zambotti made things very difficult, but I should have been on better form. If I had performed to my full potential she wouldn’t have given me any problems,” she said.
“I still feel pretty raw and I will be asking myself in a few days what went wrong. Going into the bout I felt like I hadn’t left any stones unturned. I wouldn’t have changed anything about my approach and I came in feeling very strong mentally and physically.
“Judo is physically and mentally hard. I’ve been lucky. I’ve had a great support team around me, and I’m sure they are as disappointed as I am. I’ll be asking myself for a long time what went wrong.”
