Downie Achieves Gymnastics Landmark

15/08/2008

Teenager Becky Downie today (Friday) achieved the best placing yet by a British gymnast in an individual all-around final at an Olympic Games.

The 16-year-old finished 12th in today’s final with a total points score of 59.450.

She scored 15.625 on the asymmetric bars, 15.025 on the vault, 14.700 on the beam and 14.100 for her floor routine.

“I’m really happy,” she said. “I couldn’t have hoped for much better. It went really well today.

Downie had only just qualified to take part in the individual all-around final, filling the 24th and final berth in the qualifying round on Sunday (10th August).

“I was aiming to get into the top 24 and make the final,” she said. “I knew it was possible.

“I only just qualified, but I pushed myself up the rankings today. Everything went really well today. I just wanted to do my best and enjoy it.”

The previous best performance was 19th, achieved by Beth Tweddle in Athens four years ago.
