Stephen Rowbotham

Rowbotham started his sporting career as a top-level tennis player, playing county and regional level before moving to Belgium for three and a half years.  He learnt to row at Durham University in 2000 under Wade Hall–Craggs.  He graduated from Durham in 2003 and was selected for the World U23 Championships in a double scull with Alan Campbell but was unable to compete.

Rowbotham won a silver medal in the single at the FISU World University Championships in 2004, his first major international success after the frustration of narrowly missing selection for the Olympic Games in Athens.

In 2005 he was third in the men's single at the GB Rowing Senior Trials and raced in the quad at the World Cup regattas, finishing sixth at Eton, fourth at Munich and then becoming the first British crew to win a world level medal in the men's quad by taking the bronze in Lucerne.

At the 2005 World Championships in Gifu, Japan, the men's quad hoped to reach the final but fell just short of their target.  However, they bounced back to win the B final.

In 2006 with Matthew Wells, he was a finalist at the Munich World Cup, won a bronze in Poznan and finished off with silver in Lucerne.  They rounded off the season with a great performance on home water to take the bronze medal in the double scull at the World Championships at Eton

In the 2007 World Cup Series, Rowbotham won silver and gold in the double with Matt Wells and went on to place fourth at the World Championships in Munich.  In the 2008 World Cup Series, they raced in the double at the first and second regattas winning gold and silver.
