Stephen Rowbotham was selected in the men's double scull for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and won a bronze medal, the first British men's Olympic sculling medal since 1976. In Beijing, in a very challenging field, they missed silver by four hundredths of a second. This was the culmination of an exceptional 3 years in the double with Matt Wells.

At the 2009 World Championships, Rowbotham and Wells, were knocked out of their semi-final in Poznan, finishing fourth in their double scull semi-final.
