Caitlin McClatchey

A former county standard runner, studies Politics & Int Relations at Loughborough Uni.

A surprise Olympian in Athens, she had scarcely finished her A Levels when she produced a superb swim in the ASA trials 200m freestyle, which earned her a place in the 4x200m squad which placed 5th.

In 2005, her 400m freestyle bronze at the FINA World Championships in Montreal catapulted her into the limelight as a prospect for Beijing.

British record holder over 200m and 400m freestyle,she began 2006 with double gold at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. Her 400m Freestyle was 0.01 seconds outside the games record. Later in the season, she won 400m bronze at the European Championships in Budapest.

She is literally following the example set by her parents.Father John swam for Scotland at the 1970 Edinburgh Commonwealth Games, mum Louise made the trip to Christchurch New Zealand for the 1974 games.

Originally a county standard runner, McClatchey decided to concentrate on swimming and made the Scottish youth squad in 2000. She made the senior squad for the first time in 2002.

McClatchey sets herself a punishing schedule, cramming two daily three hour training sessions into her day as a Politics and International Relations student at Loughborough University. She paid tribute to the facilities at her University after securing her second gold in Melbourne.
