Richard reached the quarter-finals of the Olympic foil competition in Athens which was Britain's best Fencing performance at the games in 40 years. He had beaten Dan Kellner the 2003 Pan American Games champion but lost to the eventual bronze medallist Andrea Cassara

He won silver at the 2006 European Championships in Izmir (TUR) where he topped his opening round with 5 wins out of five and then, in the Direct Elimination stage, he won three further fights to reach the last four.
