At the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Mark Foster was the oldest member of the Great Britain swimming team at the age of 38. Beijing was his fifth Olympic Games.
Foster missed out on the qualification time for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games by 0.07.
In 2006 Foster retired from competitive swimming after the 2006 Manchester Commonwealth Games, having won 47 major international medals in his remarkable career.
In 2007 Foster returned from retirement with an aim to win his first Olympic medal at the Beijing On his return to the British squad he won a silver medal in the 50 m freestyle at the 2008 World Championships, and qualified to represent Great Britain in the same event at the Olympics.
