19 Jan 2007
Sixteen-year old Jordan Gayle won Team GB’s 10th medal today as he reached the final of the 48-55kg taekwondo competition. Gayle came through the first round against one of the Australian fighters and had a fantastic fight against the Chinese champion.
In the final Gayle came up against another Australian. 1-1 after the first round, the Aussie went ahead quickly in the second which finished 3-1. With 30 seconds to go in the final round and 4-1 down Gayle’s powerful kick had his opponent on the mat. stepped outside the area making it 3-1 but with onlyh 3 seconds left on the clock it was too late for Gayle to make up the difference.
Taekwondo Performance Director and Team Leader at the AYOF Gary Hall congratulated Gayle on his earlier rounds and silver medal winning performance:
“It was a great result for Jordan considering his age and experience. He was national champion for the first time this year and has had limited success at competition outside of the UK. To come to an event like this, perform so well and come away with a silver medal is fantastic and more importantly a valuable experience for the future.”
