Biography

The first IAAF 1500m World Champion in 1983, Cram won his Olympic silver medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, chasing home Sebastian Coe to give Great Britain a 1-2 in the Memorial Coliseum.

He made his Olympic debut at the 1980 games in Moscow and had also joined Coe and Ovett in the 1500m final in Moscow, where he finished 8th.

His first major titles came in 1982, when he won the European Championship in Athens and  the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane. The World title followed, to make him one of the favourites for the Olympic title but it was the one major honour that always eluded him.

At his final Olympic Games in 1988 he finished 4th in the 1500m.

When he retired from the sport, he became a television commentator for Eurosport before joining BBC Sport.
