End of 8th European Youth Olympic Winter Festival

26 Feb 2007

As the team arrives home from the eighth European Youth Olympic Winter Festival (EYOWF) in Jaca, Spain, Chef de Mission Mark England reflects on the performances of our young Team GB athletes:

“The EYOWF provides an excellent opportunity for our young athletes to experience high-level competition against some of the world’s leading winter sports nations. At the end of the eighth edition of the Festival, I am proud to say that all our Team GB athletes performed well, and although they were not pushing for medals, each athlete was competing to improve their personal best and learn from the experience of participating at a multi-sport event.

The camaraderie within the team was outstanding and each athlete represented Great Britain with pride. I hope the experiences they have gained from competing here will benefit them as they embark on what we hope will be successful sporting careers.”

The youngest member of the team, figure skater Amy Tanner, was selected to lead Team GB into the Closing Ceremony at the brand-new Ice Centre in central Jaca. Tanner’s performances in the free and long programme events resulted in a personal best score. Not only were her performances outstanding but off the ice, her professional attitude and support she showed for other events made her a popular member of the team.

Tanner was “surprised and very proud” at being selected and was looking forward to the carnival atmosphere of the Closing Ceremony.
