Christine Ohuruogu

Ohuruogu defended her World Championship title in Berlin in the summer of 2009. She made the final and ran a season's best, however, only placed fifth.

Prior to her Beijing success Ohuruogu was a  400m semi finalist at Athens 2004, and was part of the Team GB 4x400m squad which reached the final. She ran a personal best of 50.28 to win Commonwealth Gold at Melbourne 2006.

Ohuruogu missed the 2006 European Championships while serving a twelve month IAAF ban for missing three out of competition drugs tests.

In 2007 Ohuruogu returned to action to claim the 400m gold medal at the World Championships in Osaka, finishing narrowly ahead of compatriot Nicola Sanders to claim a British one-two.

In November 2007 Ohuruogu successfully appealled under the BOA's Eligibility Bye-Law to have her eligibility to compete for Team GB at Olympic Games restored.

At Junior level she was a 400m Bronze medallist at the 2003 European Championships  She had come back well in 2003 after missing the previous season with a hamstring injury.

In her younger years she had also been an U17 and U19 Netball international for England. Ohuruogu decided to concentrate on athletics and gave up netball in 2003 after she won a surprise bronze medal in the European Junior 400m. In 2007 following her return from a one year ban she was selected as the British Athletics Writers’ female athlete of the year in recognition of her 400m gold at the World Championships, where she was the first GB woman to win a global 400m title. She studied linguistics at University College, London. Her parents came to Britain from Nigeria. Her sister Victoria is also a talented sprinter and set a UK U15 300m best of 40.25 in 2007.
