At his first Olympic Games Steven Burke won a bronze medal in the individual pursuit at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

He was born into a cycling family, with his mother riding for Team GB, and he began cycling at the Manchester Velodrome aged 14.

Burke was a successful junior athlete winning gold in the team pursuit at the European Championships in 2005 and silver at the Junior World Track Championships in the team pursuit the same year.
