Alastair Heathcote was selected in the men's eight for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and won a silver medal, finishing in front of the Americans and behind the Canadians.

Heathcote started rowing at the age of 15 at Eton College however; he decided not to pursue the sport beyond high school. Instead, he decided on a different path, and moved to New Zealand to work on a farm sheering sheep. After a year abroad Heathcote moved back to Great Britain where he went to study at Newcastle University.
