Background
The Australian Olympic Committee has followed up the outstanding success of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games by organising and hosting Youth Olympic Festivals occurring biannually since 2001.
The January 2007 event involved competitors aged 13-19 from 23 nations around the world. The Festival is funded to a large extent by the Australian Olympic Committee and all events, aside from the opening ceremony, are free to spectators.
The Festival strives to provide a true Olympic experience to the young competitors, including living in village accommodation, drug testing and all the Olympic traditions such as the Ceremonies, athlete’s parade and taking of oaths. The overall aim is to fully prepare the young athletes for appearances at future Olympic Games and discover future Olympic champions in the process.
For the first time this Festival included football and sailing as well as the introduction of two winter Olympic sports in the shape of figure skating and short track speed skating.
